Sauntering from one delectable bar to another glorious restaurant in this very elegant city, one can get a bit jaded. Oh, look, another full-height bar and gorgeous room… Never fear, though, if it’s sheer wow factor you’re after, Berners Tavern does not disappoint. Even by the standards of the 21st C. revival of high-class dining spaces, this 2013 addition to the dining scene is undeniably spectacular.
The main dining room is double height, with a wealth of period mouldings and well-executed lighting. The walls are crammed artfully with framed pictures of varying merit and the dining furniture is well above the typical standard: both attractive and comfortable. The bar, at the back, is another focus point and worth a go.
Managed by well-known chef Jason Atherton, it is part of the London Edition Hotel but stands on its own in a way that not many ‘hotel’ restaurants do. The cuisine follows the rather fashionable concept of meat- and fish-focused ‘modern’ British cuisine with twist of auteur. The breakfast is very good. Pricing, even for such a grand salon, is frankly plutocratic, making it a once-in-a-rather-great-while sort of place.
